Three Signs Your Pet Is Suffering From Allergies

Notice a rash or irritation on your pet's skin? It's possible that your furry friend is suffering from an allergy. If your pet is exhibiting any of the signs below, it's a good idea to have an expert in pet dermatology assess them for possible allergies. If you notice your pet doing any of the following three behaviors, you'll want to take them to a vet to get checked for possible allergies.

Signs of Allergies

Scratching - All animals scratch from time to time, but if the scratching becomes excessive, it's likely that your pet is suffering from an allergy. If you notice your pet seems to be scratching constantly, take a look at their skin in the irritated area. If it appears red, broken, or flaky, you'll want to schedule a consultation with a pet dermatology expert.

Rubbing - For some pets, it's normal to rub their faces on furniture. Cats do this to mark their territory. If you notice your dog rubbing his or her face on objects, or your cat engaging in this behavior excessively, it's possible that they have an allergy and are using an object to scratch their skin. Take notice of what your pet is rubbing. If it's soft surfaces, this is likely typical marking behavior. If they're constantly rubbing pointy or rough surfaces (such as the corner of a coffee table), it's a good idea to check for skin irritation or a rash that could indicate an allergy.

Biting - If you notice your dog or cat biting at their own skin, it's likely that an allergy is a culprit. Many animals resort to biting when scratching fails to provide them with relief from their itch.
