Tips from our Johnston Veterinarian on Roadtripping with Your Pet

Summer is here and if you’re planning a road trip with your pet, it’s best to prepare ahead!  Rush Animal Care Clinic P.C. in Johnston, IA has some travel tips on how to prepare for a road trip with your pet and make sure the trip goes well for everyone!

Pet-Friendly Locations

Call hotels, restaurants, and any other places you plan to stop along the way. Many places have breed restrictions and some hotels will not allow your pet to be left unattended in the room. Some hotels include the information on their website. Prepare ahead and make sure you have the best information on where you can go with your pet.

Visit Your Veterinarian First

Make an appointment with your pet's veterinarian for a checkup and verify that their vaccinations are up-to-date. On road trips, pets often encounter threats they might not encounter at home. Ask your vet if your pets need additional shots or medications.

Pack Your Pets Bags

You have packed your bags, now it’s time to pack your pet's bag! Some helpful items to bring:

  • Food and treats
  • Drinking Water
  • Food and Water Bowls
  • Pet Health Records Including Proof of Vaccinations
  • Current ID tags, Photos, Microchip Pet Medications
  • Leash, Pet Bed, and Toys
  • Brush and shampoo
  • Blanket and Towel
  • First Aid Kit

Current ID tags that include your contact information and current photos can help identify your pets if they become lost or separated from you. It the id tag is lost a microchip will provide a little more security for your pet.  Some locations will require that you walk your pet on a leash. Having their own bed in an unfamiliar place will make your pets more comfortable. Bringing their favorite toys will give them something to do while in the room and while riding in the car.

Secure Your Pet

Keep your pets safe while riding in your car. In an accident, they can be thrown into a window. By securing them with a pet seat belt or placing them in a crate you ensure their safety.
