How To Prevent Heat Stroke in Dogs & Cats

Johnston Veterinarian Discusses How to Prevent Heat Strokes in Dogs & Cats

Heat stress can come on quickly in animals so it is important to recognize the signs in your pet quickly as well. Some of the first signs that your animal is experiencing stress from high temperatures include excessive salivation and panting. Often the saliva will appear thick or ropey. The membranes around the mouth, eyes, and tongue will appear bright red in dogs that have light pigmentation. Another symptom may be vomiting if your cat or dog is experiencing gastrointestinal stress as a result of high temperatures. Your animal may appear weak and can even collapse. If you find your animal in a collapsed state is it imperative to get him or her to the vet immediately.

How to Prevent Heat Stress and Injury in Pets

The first step in preventing heat stress in pets is to understand just how quickly heat stress can occur. Even on a mild day an animal can become overheated very quickly. When it is hot outside keep your pet's exercise to a minimum. If possible, try to save long walks and rigorous exercise to the early morning or late evening when the sun goes down. Under no circumstances should a pet ever be left in a car. Even on a 70-degree day vehicle temperatures can reach over 104 degrees after just 30 minutes. Temperatures this high can prove to be extremely dangerous and even deadly for your cat or dog. If you notice your cat or dog start to exhibit some signs of heat stroke, being able to act fast to help alleviate your pet's stress can save his or her life.
